How to Prep Your E-Bike Frame for Powder Coating
What we need from you
We coat bare frames only. That means motor, battery, controller, wiring, bearings, and every plastic or rubber component has to come off before the frame ships to us. The cure oven runs at ~400°F — anything that isn't bare metal will melt, smoke, or destroy itself.
If you'd rather not tear down the bike yourself, we offer full disassembly and reassembly as an add-on at quote — a flat $250 on a Sur-Ron, $300 on a Talaria.
Full strip list
Remove from the frame: motor and chain, battery, controller and all wiring harnesses, headset bearings and cups, swingarm pivot bearings, brake lines and calipers, all plastics and fenders, seat, suspension (fork and shock), wheels, footpegs, kickstand, and all dropout hardware.
Leave: nothing internal. Bearings in particular will be destroyed by the cure cycle and can damage our oven racks. If you're not sure whether a part will survive 400°F, take it off.
Mask requests: serial number plates, head tube threaded inserts, motor mount threads, and any logo you want preserved should be noted on your order. We plug and high-temp tape them before media blast.
Cleaning before you ship
A quick degrease saves us blast time and saves you money. Spray the frame with brake cleaner or a citrus degreaser and wipe off chain lube, grease, and grime. You don't need to be obsessive — we media-blast every frame to bare metal as step one — but visibly oily frames cost more to prep.
Do NOT sand, strip, or chemically dip the frame yourself. Home chemical strippers leave residues that cause fish-eye in the cured powder, and DIY sanding usually rounds off important edges.
Packing the crate
We ship you a foam-lined wooden crate sized for your specific frame within 3 business days of order. Drop the bare frame in, close it, and slap on the prepaid return label included inside the lid. Hand it to FedEx or UPS — pickup is also free if you schedule it.
Your turnaround clock starts the day the frame lands at our shop, not the day you ship. Full step-by-step is in our shipping guide.
What ships back
Your frame, fully coated and cured, with masking removed, threads chased, and bearing surfaces protected. Reinstall in reverse order. If we did disassembly/reassembly, the complete bike ships back fully built, with brakes bled and the battery secured. For long-term care of your new finish, see the maintenance guide.
