Talaria vs. Sur-Ron: What's Different When You Powder Coat Them
Same idea, different frames
From a coater's perspective, the Talaria Sting and Sur-Ron Light Bee are surprisingly different builds. The Sur-Ron is a TIG-welded aluminum frame with relatively simple geometry. The Talaria is a steel-tube frame with a fully enclosed battery compartment and more weld complexity.
Both coat beautifully — but the prep, masking, and pricing differ.
Material matters
Aluminum (Sur-Ron) requires a chromate or zirconium conversion pre-treatment to prevent corrosion under the powder film. Steel (Talaria) gets a phosphate wash. Skip either step and the coating eventually delaminates from inside out — even if it looked perfect on day one.

Masking complexity
Sur-Ron: 11 masked points on a stock frame (headset, BB, motor mount threads, serial plate, swingarm pivot, etc).
Talaria: 18+ masked points, including the battery compartment lip, controller mount bosses, and the rear subframe bolt pattern.
Talarias take roughly 40% longer to mask — which is why our Talaria base price runs ~$50 higher than the same color on a Sur-Ron. The prep checklist covers what to remove on each model before shipping.
Color behavior
Lighter colors and translucent candies show weld texture more on the Talaria's steel tubes than on the Sur-Ron's cleaner aluminum welds. If you want a candy red or chrome finish on a Talaria, we'll often recommend a heavier base coat to smooth the read of the welds.
On Sur-Rons, the welds are clean enough that even a thin chrome or anodized translucent looks factory.
